A couple of weeks ago saw a celebration of Women on the Move in London. Women on the Move is an organisation that champions refugee and immigrant women and the awards ceremony is an important event in their calender. Liz, from Just Bread, contacted them to see if the women on the Just Bread baking course could provide bread for the event and in doing so raise their confidence and their profile – and they said yes! We moved from Myatt’s Fields Park where we normally bake to a wonderful space at the On Patisserie in order to take advantage of their ovens which are far better and bigger than the tiny little oven we normally use. Thank you, Loretta Liu, for helping us out and letting us use the space!
We opted for tiny little pieces of bread that could be served with the other canapes at the reception before the ceremony: focaccia cut into tiny little pieces and small buns with dates were the official offering but the Imbasha that we baked on the day – and presented for show – was gobbled up too!
Two of the women were able to organise child care and come along to the event, held in the Southbank centre – somewhere neither of them had ever been. They because true saleswomen when they held centre stage, talking confidently and knowledgably about the product they had made, and passing it out with pride.
Bread nourishes people in many ways – and has the power to change lives for the better. It’s the truth.
