Bread Angel Lisa Wilson and a group of volunteer angels returned from Sardinia late last year where they were baking at the annual Sagra Del Pane festival in Villaurbana, Sardinia. Their floury activities were part of a cultural youth exchange run in conjunction with the British Council’s Youth In Action Scheme. Lisa reports back from a brilliant time baking, eating, drinking and – possibly doing some singing – and everything else that one could do (just about) to have a successful and youthful exchange!
“We were invited by the Commune of Villaurbana a charming rural town known as ‘Citta del Pane’ The City of Bread, to showcase our talents and offer a taste of Great British Cuisine to the locals and foodies of Sardinia and Italy.
Upon our arrival, we were welcomed to the local community as special guests, ate sumptuous Sardinian food and drank copious amounts of red wine all of which prepared us for the festivities that was to come.
Our stall was a patriotic display of bunting, bannetons and bread baskets evoking an English country garden atmosphere. Festival goers were drawn in because it was so very different to what they have had experienced in previous years. We were regarded as ‘exotic’ without the slightest hint of irony.
Using our Bread Angel talents we prepared a selection of traditional British breads and baked goods in a wood fired oven complimented by a range of home made jams and chutneys, red Leicester cheese (much to everyone’s bewilderment) all served with a lovely cup of tea of course.
Lisa provided a demonstration of the infamous plaited bun loaf and we answered the bombardment of questions asked at rapid fire in our basic Italian, a lot of gesticulating and an overwhelming enthusiasm!
We ate, shared, danced and sang long into the night and were certainly shown the warm hospitality Sardinians are known for. We learnt so much about Sardinian food, recipes, people and culture and made life long friends in the process.
Grazie mille Villaurbana and all’anno prossimo – see you next year!
