Executive coaching and consulting can be highly complementary and be catalysts for sustainable organisational change. However, in order to be so, the two disciplines must exist in a balance.
I find that most senior executives want a coach who will do more than simply ask them questions like “what do you think about that” or “how do you feel about that”. When seeking a coach, most senior executives are actually seeking a discussion partner: one who will listen, and ask great questions that demonstrate a deep understanding of context: industry, business, and organisational.
I also find that most senior executives want a consultant who can listen. When seeking a consultant, senior executives are also seeking a discussion partner: one who will work with them to problem solve, co-creating solutions and a way forward.
The ideal discussion partner listens to clients and works with them to identify what will help them thrive within the context of their industry, their business, and the stage of development of their organisation.
